Boxcar was started in 2010 by husband and wife team Vajra and Cara Rich with the goal of building a world class roasting company in their small hometown of Boulder, Colorado. After starting as a stand alone Roastery and building a small following by partnering with some amazing local restaurants and cafes, they opened the doors to their first cafe on the sleepy east end of Pearl St. in downtown Boulder allowing them to showcase their coffees in an elevated and forward thinking way. Since its inception Boxcar has grown to a team of 25 amazing coffee professionals. Their spaces include a busy cafe and bakery in downtown Boulder and a dedicated Roastery and training lab that serves numerous wholesale accounts all across Colorado. 

Each year they purchase a majority of their coffee from Mauricio Salaverria and his team at Divisadero Farms in El Salvador. They've done so every year they have been in business. Boxcar pays significantly over market or Fair Trade prices for his coffees as they do with all of our purchasing. Supporting Mauricio and his team is just one example of how their focus on sustainable and long lasting relationships is at the heart of what they do.


The team roast their coffees on highly modified vintage Probat drum roasters which are world renowned for their ability to produce amazing coffees. Their roasting team uses state of the art roasting software and decades of combined roasting experience to bring out the most in the coffees they source, resulting in incredibly sweet and rich cups of coffee. Their goal is to make coffee not only delicious but approachable and fun.

Stella is their workhorse blend that they serve all day, every day in their cafes. They select sweet, clean, balanced coffees that exhibit lots of chocolate and caramel flavours. The specific coffees that make up this blend change seasonally but they maintain a constant flavour profile by careful selection and working with the same producers year after year.

Balanced, sweet and citrusy is the name of the game with this blend. They combine sweet and balanced Central and South American coffees with floral and citrusy washed coffees from Ethiopia to create their perfect everyday coffee.

This blend is the coffee they reach for when they want something a little darker and little more intense than some of their other offerings. Boxcar carefully roast this to a higher final temperature to create a flavour profile that has notes of dark caramelized sugars and a slight hint of smoke.
