Rooftop Coffee Roasters is a family owned-and-operated business nestled in the beautiful mountain town of Fernie, BC. Rooftop got its start back when co-founder Keegan Street began experimenting with roasting coffee at 16 years old. To avoid smoking up the house, those first home roasts took place up on the rooftop patio of the family home, hence the name! In June 2016, the family took the leap and opened up a commercial roastery, with the goal of bringing lighter-roasted coffee with a focus on transparency and traceability to BC’s Interior. After roasting in a few different locations over the years, Rooftop has found their way back to their roots as their roastery-café now operates in that same building in downtown Fernie, below the rooftop where it all began.

Through their café, they aim to create a culture that is approachable and inviting and share their love of coffee with the people of the Kootenays. Beyond Fernie, their coffee has been served alongside North America’s most notable roasters in cafes from Vancouver to Montreal. Rooftop sources their coffee with equity and intention in mind, seeking to purchase from the same producers year after year and ensuring their buying practices translate to equitable prices and dependable commitments. Co-founder Keegan Street is actually completing a degree in Environmental Engineering with a focus on agrology and regenerative agriculture, with the aim of conducting research and integrating techniques to make coffee farms more resilient and sustainable.

They’ve come a long way since those early days on the roof, but cracking a fresh bag of green coffee still inspires the same wonder and excitement – who knows where it will take them next!

Tropical, bright, and intensely sweet, this natural is a wild one! The fruit notes remind us of fresh mango and blueberries, while the soft sweetness is reminiscent of a lychee. Not your typical “funky” natural, this one has a crystal clear acidity and fruit juice mouthfeel. This coffee comes from the Danche mill in Chelbesa. The mill is owned by Negusse Weldyes, who has been paying top prices to work with the best farmers in the area.

This coffee was purchased as part of a larger buying group of Canadian roasters, a less traditional style of coffee buying. The group was informally founded last year Canada to purchase coffees from the group of producers in Mataquescuintla. Purchasing from this group for a second year is integral in ensuring longevity and stability in our partnerships and continuing to support these land defenders in Guatemala. We roasted Abel’s to highlight the rich caramelly sweetness, while preserving the dried apple accents. It makes for an approachable, balanced and deeply sweet cup.

The Fresh Tracks is a versatile crowd-pleaser, brew it however you like, for whoever you like and it’s sure to perform consistently. A rich, chocolatey undertone matched with a creamy caramel sweetness gives this coffee a feel that is familiar and comfortable, with a little hint of citrus to keep things interesting. We stuck with all washed coffees for this blend to make it clean and vibrant when enjoyed black, and catered the roasts profiles to accommodate milk, cream, dairy alternatives and sugar. The coffee that’s sure to please, this one is like fresh tracks on a big snow day!
